THE TRUTH ABOUT FIREARMS TRAINING

There are many truths about firearms training. One of the most unfortunate truths is that most gun owners never get formal training. Many feel that they know what they're doing - - just point and pull the trigger. Some are taught (often incorrectly) by a family member or "a friend who's a cop". They go to the range or plink cans out in the woods and they are comfortable that if the time comes defend themselves, they'll be able to use their gun to do what is necessary.

The real truth is that a firearm is a tool, and like any tool, proper training and practice are required. Undisciplined use of any tool often results in injury to the user and poor results. A firearm is no different in this regard. There is no substitute for receiving skilled firearms instruction from a Certified Instructor. A firearms instructor, such as one certified by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), can properly instruct you in the safe, responsible and effective use of firearms, while assessing and correcting problems that you may develop with accuracy or comfort.

Another truth is that becoming a skilled self-defender with a firearm requires specialized training. Learning to shoot competitively or to hunt are good skills, but they will not teach you what you need to know when you need to defend yourself from a deadly attack. Stalking a deer will not prepare you to defend yourself against a party of three armed robbers who decide to kick in your front door.

The final truth is that there are firearm instructors and there are defensive firearms instructors. If your purpose in owning a gun is to protect yourself from dangerous violent crime, domestic abuse or people who see you as a target for violence because of your religion, race, gender, sexual orientation or physical disability, consider seeking defensive firearms training. Your life may depend on it.
